Israelis who want to live as they please already do so, generally without membership in some faux-Jewish-religious organization or movement.   The appeal of such groups is overstated.

a more balanced view is presented in Rav Sabato book recording his conversations with RAL ztl.

no doubt Israelis, whose population is dominated by sephardim, the descendants of eastern europe and emigres from the USSR, have had a minimal non-orthodox presence.  as a result they have had limited if any familiarity with conservative or reform judaism.  however, to the current chief rabbis and their chareidi brethern, it is not just the conservative and reform they are trying to stifle.  i do not believe current/recent  incidents involving rabbis lookstein, farber, binyamin lau, riskin, medan, etc. etc. represent anything but a face of judaism that is hardly a role model for tolerance.
