CER: Open Orthodox Rabbis are Not Rabbis

The Conference of European Rabbis issued a strong condemnation of the self-described “Open Orthodox” movement last week, explicitly stating that graduates of its institutions are not recognized as rabbis anywhere within the Torah-observant communities of Europe. The enclosed is the original text as conveyed to us by the CER, followed by our translation:

ועידת רבני אירופה מאגדת בשורותיה רבנים שהוסמכו על פי ההלכה, ומנהיגים את קהילותיהם על פי מסורת הדורות כנתינתה ומסירתה בסיני וכפי שמועברת לנו ע”י גדולי ופוסקי הדור זצוק”ל ושליט”א.
כמאז יסודה הועידה תקבל לשורותיה רק רבנים שעונים לעקרונות היהדות וההלכה המוזכרים בזה ולא תקבל כל יוזמות חדשות שאינן ברוח ההלכה, והמסורת ברוח ישראל סבא,
הועידה רואה בצער רב את הסטיות מיסודי הדת המגיעות מכיוונה של התנועה הנקראת “האורוטודוקסיה הפתוחה” ומצהירה בזאת שאלו הפועלים ברוח זו בוגרי מוסדות התנועה הנ”ל, מהמוסד הקרוי חובבי תורה ודומיו, לא יוכרו על ידינו כרבנים על כל המשתמע מכך.

The Conference of European Rabbis unites within its ranks rabbis ordained according to Halacha, who lead their communities according to the tradition of generations, as given and transmitted at Sinai, and as passed to us by the Torah giants and decisors of the generation (both those whose remembrance should be a blessing, and those who should yet have long and good days).

Since its founding, the Conference has accepted into its ranks only Rabbis who observe the principles of Judaism, and Jewish law found within it, and has not accepted new “initiatives” that are not in the spirit of Jewish law and the traditions in the spirit of ancient Israel.

The Conference observes with great regret the deviations from our religious foundations coming from the direction of the movement called “Open Orthodoxy,” and hereby declares that those who act in that spirit, graduates of institutions of the aforementioned movement, from the institute called “Chovevei Torah” and the like, are not recognized by us as rabbis, with all that that entails.
