Frum Irish Eyes, Still Smiling

A few weeks ago, we posted a short piece on the remarkable career of Rabbi Theodore Lewis z”l. Rabbi Akiva Males of Harrisburg, PA pointed us to a later story with an anecdote too good not to share:

Scholarly and unmarried, the Orthodox rabbi always had a reservoir of wit at his disposal, as when then-Gov. John H. Chafee invited a group of clergy to the State House for breakfast, and wondered if he had made a faux pas by serving meat on a Friday.

“Don’t worry, governor,” said a Catholic priest. “Vatican II took care of that.”

But looking down at the non-kosher Irish bacon, Rabbi Lewis said, “I’m sorry, governor, we’re still operating under Sinai I.”
