‘The difference between the Nazis’ persecution of political enemies and “social misfits” – and the visceral, genocidal loathing they reserved for the Jews. ‘

I think the issue here is that when it comes to people being gassed in ovens, it makes very little difference whether they were intensely loathed or just somewhat disliked, and trying to make that difference just make you look silly at best and profoundly insensitive at worst.

The Germans were invited to the 50th and 60th anniversary celebrations of V-E day. The premiers stood next to the leaders of the Allies as if they were all celebrating the same thing for the same reason.

If this is the case, then why should time blur the Holocaust for some and turn it into a ethno-neutral event?

Ori: They were. The current crops of Germans are probably happy the Nazis lost WWII – they wouldn’t have wanted to grow up in a dictatorship.

  4. Nachum Lamm says:

Gershon Josephs: Very few peoples (as a category) were “gassed in ovens.” (Actually, no one was “gassed in ovens.” Gassing was done in gas chambers or vans; bodies were burnt in ovens. It pays to be accurate here.) Jews were; perhaps gypsies were. Most other victims of the Nazis were imprisoned in concentration camps, which was awful, of course, and many died as a result, but few were killed as a policy, and none (again, with the possible exception of gypsies, although I’m not sure about that, and they don’t have the lobby the homosexuals do anyway) were targeted for extermination as a whole as Jews were.

    Mr Josephs,

Is there any evidence that the Nazis were interested in the complete 100% annihiliation of any group other than the Jews?
